Ayurveda Today

Ayurveda Today : Ayurveda, the Science of Life is said to have passed traditionally from master to disciples orally. Later, Thaliyola, a palm leaf, was used for writing medical details while Narayam, an iron pin, was used as pen. The disciples had to stay in their master's house or resident school known as 'Gurukula' where one could learn about the finesse of the medical profession. The continuous scientific research has improved Ayurveda constantly and it is now being taught as a well-developed stream in various Ayurveda Colleges in Kerala. The Ayurvedic doctors passing out from these colleges are require to graduate through the 5 years of courses at college besides six months of internship and are considered at par with doctors of modern medicine. Based on the philosophy of healthy living prescribed in Atharva Veda, besides providing remedies for various illnesses, it aims at promoting ideal lifestyles that are said to prevent the onset of sickness and disease.

Ayurveda treatment is individualistic according to their respective constitutions. The popularity of Ayurveda has been increasing rapidly over the years and patients from all over the world come to Kerala and India for Ayurveda treatment. Treatment processes for detoxification and strengthening the immune system of the body forms the basis of Ayurveda. Herbal extracts, food supplements and health food preparation using the herbal plantations of tropical Kerala and Yoga and meditation also form part of the Kerala Ayurveda. Kerala has managed to maintain Ayurveda in its most authentic form. The best part of Ayurvedic treatment is its trying to abstain from drug and treatment dependency and concentrating on the health habits and lifestyles in a person to eliminate the root cause of the disease itself. However, doctors and therapists suggest that Ayurveda is more effective in monsoon season when the atmosphere remains dust free and cool and body pores are opened to their maximum making the body more receptive to herbal oils and therapy.
