Cochin City, KeralaKochi or Cochin with one of the finest natural harbors in the world is the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala. Influenced heavily by the traders from Arabia, China, Holland, Britain and Portugal, this seashore town of Arabian Sea is actually a cluster of seven islands, the mainland being Ernakulam. The cosmopolitan character of the city can be seen it its buildings and structures that represent architectural styles from different parts of the world. The commercial hub of Kerala and city of peninsulas and islands, it is one of the Kerala's prime tourist destinations with its splendid beaches and glorious Backwaters. A complex system of ferries link the mainland of modern Ernakulam in the east to the old districts of Mattancherry and Fort Cochin on a peninsula in the west.

The natural harbor of Kochi emerged when the floods silted up the mouth of the Muziris harbor, present-day Kodungalloor on the mouth of the Periyar River, which was 40 km north of Kochi. The rich trade center featuring products like pepper and pearls, fine silks, cotton, muslin, honey, oil, betel, tortoise shell, cinnamon leaf, black pepper, ginger grass and indigo then shifted to Kochi. Kochi was declared a major port in 1936, which brought about a complete reorientation of shipping and commercial activities on the Malabar Coast. It is the busiest port south of Mumbai. It is also one of the few ports of the world offering facilities of all the three main forms of transport, by land sea and air all at once.
