Kannur or Cannanore, the erstwhile capital of the north Kothagiri rulers, is one of the important port of ancient Kerala. It has found reference in the Marco Polo's travelogues as a great Emporia of spice trade. The ancient Greek work, 'Periplus of the Erithrean Sea' refers to Kannur as 'Naura'. This city has many historical monuments to boast of. According to folklore, the ships of Solomon anchored here to collect timber for building the 'Temple of the Lord'. Kannur is made up of two words - Kannan meaning Lord Krishna and Ur meaning Place. Thus, Kannur is said to be the place of Lord Krishna. Kannur is said to be the place of origin of Theyyam or Theyattam, a popular ritual dance of Malabar that presents a unique combination of dance, music and tribal culture.

Kannur is the important producer of spices such as black pepper, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon. It was the vast demand for spices that finally prompted the Portuguese to discover the direct sea route to India in 1498. The Portuguese introduced the cashews tree here that have become one of the major export of the state. It is also famous for its cotton handlooms since ancient times and several weaving centers flourish here. Germans contributed to the development of Handloom industry here by introducing frame looms. The handloom products from Kannur are quite in demand in USA, UK, Japan and other European countries for their inimitable quality and designs.

Shopping Attractions:
Known for its spices such as black pepper, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon, Kannur exports cashew nuts and good-quality cotton handlooms. One can buy sarees, shirts and furnishings from here. The main shopping complexes in the area are South Bazar, Stadium Complex, Market Road and Super Bazar Complex.
