Gangtok Tourism - Located at an elevation of 5600 feet, Gangtok is the capital city of Sikkim. Famous for its Lamas in colourful maroon and mustard dresses, elderly matrons in their traditional bakus and a plethora of monasteries; it is one of the most visited cities of Sikkim. Gangtok is popular for its local handicrafts such as Wall Hangings, Thankas, Prayer Wheels, Tibetan Carpets, Rugs and Jewellery etc which can be shopped for at the Government Institute of Cottage Industry or the Dalai Lama Trust Fund Shop in Gangtok.

Gangtok is believed to have remained a small hamlet until the construction of Enchey Monastery in 1840 which made Gangtok a popular pilgrimage center of Sikkim. After the defeat of Tibetans by British, Gangtok became one of the most favorable stopovers in the trade between British and Tibetans in 19th century. Most of the roads and telegraphs of this area were made during the period.

Well connected by rail, road and air, the nearest airport to the city is at Bagdogra in West Bengal around124 km. Regular flights are available to and from all the major cities like Delhi and Kolkata.

New Jalpaiguri, 125 km from Gangtok is the nearest railhead which is well connected to the neighboring cities and states by daily trains. Regular buses and taxis ply abundantly for the interiors of Gangtok from here.
